Warrior coach to look for discipline in final games

MATTAWA - With only three games left in this rebuilding year, Wahluke High coach Brycen Bye will have his boys working on football discipline.

"We'll work on doing our jobs, carrying out our assignments," he said. "We need to learn to make the plays needed to win games. These boys need to learn how to win."

The difference between a completely veteran team and a team dominated by youth and inexperience was on display last Friday on the Wahluke gridiron. State championship contender Royal, 6-0, scored 35 points in the second period en route to a 49-13 win.

Wahluke, 1-5, did not cross the goal line until the second half, and that play was a highlight. Defensive end Dario Prudente picked up a Royal fumble and returned it 62 yards.

The Warriors' second tally came on an 18-yard pass play between quarterback Arturo Salazar and running back Steven Machuca.

On defense, Alex Chiprez intercepted a pass by Royal's all-everything quarterback Alex Myrick. Machuca also made an interception.

The season doesn't get any easier this Friday. One-loss River View is next at RV. The Panthers are state playoff contenders.

"They're a lot like Royal. They've got a lot of experienced seniors," Bye said.

After that, Wahluke will host Highland in a non-league homecoming game, travel to Connell for the final SCAC East contest and then play the season-ending SCAC East-West cross-over match-up.
