National interest in Mattawa police chief position

MATTAWA - The position of police chief in the City of Mattawa is drawing the attention of candidates from across the country.
The City of Mattawa is seeking a progressive, community-oriented police chief to lead a department of four full time officers. The three applicants as of Friday are from California, Nebraska and Missouri.
The position came open after former Chief Steve Jensen resigned at the end of September. His resignation was no surprise. He'd been on paid leave for two months while his department was audited and assessed.
Mayor Judy Esser explained the action by saying the city was seeking the best possible police department. In the end, Jensen wrote to Esser that he would take advantage of opportunities elsewhere.
Candidates must fit a small-town operation. The chief must have the ability and willingness to function as a patrol officer.
The period for receiving applications will end at the close of business on Friday, October 19. Then the process of paring down the candidates will commence.
