Quincy blanks Chelan

CHELAN - Jacob Durfee scored two touchdowns and Andy Vargas added another as the Jacks rolled to a 21-0 road win over the Goats Friday. The win improves Quincy to 3-1 and moves the team into a second place tie with Okanogan and just one game back of Cashmere and Cascade in the Caribou Trail league standings.

"Offensively we struggled to get into a rhythm as we had the ball inside the 5-yard line twice in the first quarter and did not get any points ... we fumbled the ball and missed a field goal," coach Stephen Wallace said. "But our defense and special teams stepped up and played great."

The game was close in the first 12 minutes of action as the teams battled to a 0-0 score. But the Jacks broke things open in the second quarter with an 8-yard TD run by Vargas (PAT failed), a safety and a 3-yard run by Durfee (2-point failed) to go up 14-0. The score held up through intermission.

"We had another opportunity to put points on the board right before half," Wallace said. "But missed on several open plays and had to settle for another field goal attempt, which missed barely to the left."

Double gooses eggs were posted on the scoreboard in the third quarter of play as neither team was able to reach the end zone. Quincy got an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard dash by Durfee (PAT) to round out the scoring, and then held Chelan in check to preserve the shutout and record the win.

"Our defense played well all night and gave our offense opportunities with short field position," Wallace said. "Chelan only crossed mid-field twice in the game."

The Jacks special teams also played a big part in the win.

"They did a great job," Wallace said. "Especially our kick off team, which never allowed them to start with the ball outside of the 20 yard line."

Vargas led the ground and pound attack for Quincy which churned out 331 yards for the game as he rushed for 114 on seven carries.

Antionio Melendez added 81 yards on 17 attempts, Durfee carried the rock 24 times for 70 yards, and Darren Hodges contributed 66 yards on six carries.

The stingy Jacks defense limited the Goats to 153 total yards for the game.

Quincy is back in action Friday when the team hosts Tonasket at 7 p.m.
