Tough season so far for Royal girls soccer team

| October 7, 2012 6:00 AM

ROYAL CITY - Judging by results so far, this may be a difficult year for Royal High School girls soccer.

The Knights are 0-3 after a 3-0 loss to Warden and a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Connell last week.

"We are a new team," coach Jens Jensen said. "We graduated the entire spine of our team. But it is a good group of girls who are improving each match.

"At the moment they are lacking the experience and edge they need to tight games. We hope that as the season goes on, we'll get there."

The Knights were in the Warden game until the 64th minute. A pair of quick goals changed the score from 1-0 to an insurmountable margin.

"This match was a decent one. We kept nearly all of Warden's shots outside the danger area and were able to cause some distress on their end," Jensen said. "The girls showed some ability to turn and pass the ball. So we are pleased with the progress."

The Connell loss was not close. The Knights never gave up, but they were over-matched.

"Connell was too strong for us," Jensen said. "We were able to give everyone match experience. So there were a handful of positives despite the final score."
