Reader responds to Candidates' Forum

| October 5, 2012 6:00 AM

At the Moses Lake Candidates' Forum both candidates for State Representative spoke. Matt Manweller's presentation was smooth, well-spoken, a long-time school teacher, turned lobbyist in Olympia. He believes in everything smaller: less government in everything; a right-to-work state for less wages; less regulation of clean water, air, etc. from the EPA; less safety rules in the workplace and less business regulation of all kinds; and repeal of the Affordable Care Act. He is most concerned about spending cuts and taxes.

Kaj Selmann's presentation was less practiced, but more specific in details. He described how to bring more water, year-round, to the Basin, using solar and wind during peak power generation times, rather than dumping or shutting down these energy sources in times of excess generation. This would recharge the aquifer, fill new reservoirs, while creating new water sources as renewable energy, for farming and recreation. He also answered the question why he is a Democrat: the party of "Big Ideas" that serve the people - Grand Coulee Dam, the irrigation project, electricity generation - which created the Columbia Basin and Moses Lake, the oasis in the high desert. And Selmann, as an employer and subscriber, supports the Affordable Health Care Act. Vote for Selmann - he's concerned about people.

On Romney: relying on zingers to win a debate, rather than truthful solutions to problems, leaves grave doubt about his abilities to govern. And as President, sitting across the table from a foreign leader, that says what he means the first time he says it, rather than a restatement of meaning a few hours or days after the original statement, nearly every time he speaks. Vote Democratic for people, for country, for the future.
