EPHRATA - Recently appointed Grant County PUD commissioner Larry Schaapman was sworn in on Monday. PUD commissioners unanimously appointed Schaapman earlier this month to fill the open District 3 commissioner seat left vacant by former commissioner Randy Allred. Schaapman will serve the remainder of Allred's term, which expires in December 2014.

Allred resigned due to ongoing health issues, according to the PUD.

Schaapman is a long-time resident of Quincy, and operates a large farm operation with his sons. Commissioner Tom Flint said Schaapman's farming background will be an asset to the board, since Allred had similar agricultural experience.

"Larry is a progressive farmer from the Quincy area, and he brings a lot of knowledge to the commission that I think will be very beneficial," said Flint during a board meeting earlier this month.

District 3 covers Mattawa, Quincy, George, Royal City and areas west of Moses Lake.
