Reader questions "welfare the winner"

| November 28, 2012 5:00 AM

The notion that millions of people in this country just expect a handout is ludicrous.

Even though the percentages stated in the letter to the editor are seriously flawed in many ways, those millions of people in the supposed 70% include first responders, teachers, cops, and in some cases, nurses, to name just a few.

By the way, the farm subsidies that have been ongoing since the 1930's probably also qualify as "handouts." At any rate, it's quite likely that all of these folks, plus others, would be pretty insulted to be lumped into the "handout" category.

The statement that the 30% pay all the taxes is a significant math problem. Even if not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to earn the necessary money to pay income taxes, the so-called "70%" still pay sales taxes, gas taxes, local government taxes, school levies, and the list goes on.

The result of the election did, in fact, come down to two issues: The President, whom the significant majority (popular and electoral) voted to re-elect and the challenger and his running mate who were actually just preaching to the out of tune choir.

This wonderful country is becoming a diverse, colorful, energetic and changing place, all of which is a very good thing. Those among us who feel so aggrieved that the "traditional America" is disappearing are becoming, and will forever be, in the minority. Get over it and move on.
