Daniel was born on March 15, 1922 in Wheeler, Washington to John D. Senior and Sophia (Deltzer) Hochstatter. He was the 12th of 13 children. Dan's parents immigrated to the Gloyd, North Stratford area from Odessa, Ukraine in 1902. They were of German decent. The family moved to Neppel (Moses Lake) in the mid twenties and as a young man, Dan worked as a mechanic and machinist for his older brother, John D. Junior.

Dan served in the Air-Sea rescue during World War II, and in April 1945 during an attempted rescue of a P-51 pilot, their PBY Flying Boat was shot up and sank. The crew spent 4 days on the North Sea on a rubber raft before being rescued.

Dan married the love of his life, Rebecca "Betty" Harris on September 18, 1948. She preceded him in death.

Dan served on the Moses Lake volunteer fire department in the 1940's and 1950's, and except for a brief period with Boeing, he spent his whole life as a motor winder at Hochstatter Electric. Dan made everything work at Hochstatter Electric. Everything in its place, all the tools sharpened, scrap in the right bin. In his strongly opinionated fashion, he suffered from his less fastidious nephews, Cliff and Harold. "Pick up after yourself!! I ain't your mother," he would say. Dan retired last June at the age of 90.

He is survived by his daughters, Celeste Campos and Danielle (Vern) Smith; his granddaughters, Terynia and Llysa Smith; and his sister Darlene Esposito.
