MOSES LAKE - The girl in Peggy McNutt's second grade class at Midway Elementary had a question about the list her classmates had prepared, the one they were writing as part of their classes about Thanksgiving.

McNutt asked the second graders what they were thankful for, and the kids had put together a long list, including their moms and dads, their grandparents, their brothers and sisters and cousins and their dogs, among other things. One girl didn't have a dog, she said. She had a cat. Could she be thankful for her cat?

One of the boys, way in the back of the room, was dissatisfied with the list. He was not thankful for his sister, he said.

McNutt said the list is an important part of her classes at Thanksgiving time, and every kid lists all those things, from their moms and dads to their bikes, that they are thankful for. Each kid also colors a turkey to go with the list, and yes, one girl insisted, a turkey can have purple feet.

The second graders shared some of their answers at the all-school Thanksgiving dinner Wednesday morning.
