Lions district champs

ENTIAT - Moses Lake Christian Academy was crowned the 2012 Central Washington 1B District Champion after winning both of its matches at the district tournament over the weekend, and are moving on to the state tournament at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

The Lions defeated Soap Lake in three sets (25-6, 25-18, 25-6) Nov. 1, then turned back Pateros in four sets (20-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-19) in the championship round Saturday to qualify for the 'Big Show.'

Leading the way against the Nannies was Susan Timofeyev with 15 kills. Rachel Verhage added 9 kills, 5 aces and 11 assists, Madison Yamane contributed 5 kills and 2 aces, and Anna Yarbro who finished with 3 kills, 4 aces and 20 assists.

The win over Pateros sets up a first round match with Colton High School at 11:30 Friday morning.

"We are playing really well right now, but I don't believe we have peaked yet," coach Dean Spurbeck said. "Colton placed second at state last year, so the match will be a good challenge for us. Volleyball is a game of runs, so if we can control the tempo, limit their runs and put together a few of our own, we should do well against them."
