Jacks beat Scotties

ROCKFORD - Jacob Durfee ran for 98 yards and a touchdown and Antonio Melendez added another score to lead Quincy to a 19-7 road win over Freeman Friday.

The victory advances the Jacks to a first round state match up with the Zillah Leopards Friday.

"The game was won by our defense and special teams," coach Stephen Wallace said. "Offensively we made the plays when we needed to and scored each time we reached the red zone, but our defense and special teams did a great job of giving us good field position, while constantly pinning Freeman deep in their territory."

The hard-fought physical contest saw Quincy and Freeman battle to a 0-0 tie in the first 12 minutes of action. The only points in the first half of play came off a 32-yard Mario Figueroa field goal to give Quincy a 3-0 lead at the break.

The Scotties struck first in the third quarter on a 30-yard pass from Kian Gentleman to Wyatt Smith (PAT) to take its only lead of the game, 7-3. The Jacks responded with a Melendez 1-yard dash (kick failed) to go back on top, 10-7 to end the third quarter scoring. A Durfee 1-yard run (PAT) pushed the score to 19-7 and sealed the deal for Quincy.

The win over Freeman means the Jacks will travel to Zillah for a game against the Leopards Friday at 7 p.m.

"Zilliah is very much like us ... ground and pound," Wallace said. "They pass just enough to make you respect it, but it will be old school football ... so it should be fun."
