Soap Lake ends season with a win

SOAP LAKE - Joe Cutshall passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Eagles blew past the Cougars 42-8 at home Friday. The win ended Soap Lake's season on a positive note in the teams' return to 8-man football.
The Eagles finished the regular season with a 1-5 league record in the Northeast 1B South Conference
"I told the guys we were proud of them for being competitive in most of our games," coach Joe Worsham said. "We made some outstanding comebacks in some of our games. We played hard and played with heart most of the time, and had a lot of highlights during the season along with, unfortunately, lots of crucial mistakes."
David Odarchuk got Soap Lake on the board on a 50 - yard reception from Cutshall (pass failed) to put the Eagles up 6-0 for the only score of the first quarter.
Cutshall's second TD pass, a 40-yard strike to Dustin Foster( Odarchuk pass from Cutshall) increased the Eagles lead to 14-0. Jason Korneychuk's 55-yard punt return (run failed), and a 37-yard run by Neo Galicia (Cutshall run) pushed the score to 28-0 at the half.
Soap Lake added another TD in the third quarter on a Galicia 50-yard run (pass failed) to increase its lead to 34-0.
Curlew avoided the shutout with eight points to finish the period.
A 6-yard fourth quarter run by Cutshall (Wes Rose run) brought the Eagle tally to 42 points for the game.
"We had a lot of young players learn a lot of lessons about playing the game of football. We did not win a lot of games, but we played hard, we practiced hard and were competitive in most of our games," Worsham said. "We will certainly miss our seniors next season: Jason Korneychuk, Wes Rose, Cody Landers and Chad Payne. They are fine young men and we wish them the best in the future. As coaches, we most certainly have to find a way to do a better job of teaching the fundamentals of blocking and tackling next season. We need to make these skills our priority in order to insure success during next football season. By shoring up these skills and improving our pass coverage skills, we will give ourselves a better opportunity to reach the playoffs next season."
