Moses Lake girls beat Eastmont

MOSES LAKE - It was a damp misty night at Lions field Tuesday as the first round of the district tournament got underway.

But the irritating drizzle didn't stop the Chiefs from dominating play as Moses Lake turned back the Wildcats 3-1 in front of a sparse home crowd.

"I thought the girls did a good job of controlling the tempo of the match," coach Ric Char said. "It was nice to see Caylah (Lunning) score a couple of goals tonight. She was a real key to our success this year and we are going to need her to keep it going against Davis."

London Cleverly got things rolling for the Chiefs with a goal eight minutes into the contest off a cross by McKenna Walker to put Moses Lake up 1-0. It was the lone score of the first half of action.

Caylah Lunning (Alysha Overland) made it 2-0 in favor of the Chiefs on a goal with 27 minutes left to play to give Moses Lake a little breathing room. Lunning (Alysha Overland) stuck again with six minutes on the clock to push the score to 3-0.

It looked as though the Chiefs would keep the Eastmont off the board as time was winding down, but a goal by the Wildcats Jerusha Pech with two minutes to go avoided the shutout for Eastmont.

The win over Eastmont sets up a showdown with Davis in Yakima Saturday at 1p.m. for the district championship.

"We just came off a big win against the Pirates, and are back at full strength with everyone healthy," Char said. "We are starting to peak at the right time and hopefully we'll keep it going against Davis Saturday."
