Girls second at district

PASCO - The Chiefs turned in another solid outing in the track and field events as Moses Lake finished second out of seven teams at the district tournament last weekend.

"This is our highest finish in the last 24 years," coach Nicki Weiland said. "The girls left everything they had on the track. It was exciting to watch them perform at such a high level."

Several Chiefs stood out on the day. The 4x100 relay team of Kayla Grigg, Alysha Overland, Caylah Lunning and Diamond Ransom broke a team record for the fourth time this year, taking first place with a time with a time of 49.06. Ransom (12.77) also finished second in the 100 meter dash. Grigg(13.21) took eighth.  Lunning (26.70) placed third in the 200. In the 400 it was London Cleverly taking top honors with a time of 59.44. Megan Roughan (2:27.55) and Casci Carpenter (2:27.63) finished seventh and eighth in the 800, and Keiley Garcia (5:32.44) was seventh in the 1600.

Overland continued to amaze in the 300 hurdles as she placed first in the event with a time of 45.09. The 4x200 relay team of  Cleverly, Grigg, Lunning and Ransom took third (1:48.02), and the 4x400 squad of Overland, Cleverly, Carpenter and Arlena Hannan finished second with a time of 4:05.96.

In the field events it was Sadie Nielsen taking second in the shot put with a toss of 36-0. She placed first in the discus with a throw of 130-05. Paige Dryer finished seventh in the Javelin (103-00), and Selina Koon was fifth in the high jump (5-00.).

Lunning (17-04.75) placed first in the long jump, Kim Bakker (16-09.75) was sixth, and Koon placed seventh at 16-08.50. And in the triple jump event it was Grigg (33-04.25) taking sixth and Bakker (32-09-75) taking seventh.

The top eight placers move on to the regional tournament in Richland Friday and Saturday. Moses Lake will be represented by Ransom, Grigg, Lunning, Alysha Overland, Cleverly, Roughan, Carpenter,  Garcia, Nielsen, Dryer, Koon and Bakker.

"All of these girls have poured their hearts and souls into it every time they've stepped foot on track and field," Weiland said. "The hard work they've put in is really paying off."

The top three placers in each event at the regional tournament will move onto state.

"I'm really excited to see what happens in Richland," Weiland said. "If things shake out right and we are able to avoid injuries, we should be able to send a few girls to state."
