Moses Lake track finishes strong

YAKIMA -The Chiefs boys and girls track team turned in a solid effort at the last dual meet of the regular season May 3 at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima.

The boys beat Chiawana 81 to 58, but the girls came up three points shy of a win as they dropped their match with the Riverhawks 72-70.

Host Eisenhower also participated in the meet, but had already competed against the Chiefs, so no team scores were reported.

Caylah Lunning got the girls off on the right foot with a first place finish (13.02) in the 100 meter dash. She placed second overall in the 200 with a time of 27.01 Rachel Massey from Eisenhower placed first overall with a time of 27 second flat.

Competing for the first time in the 400 was Alysha Overland, who took first overall with a time of 59.86. Megan Roughan placed third overall in the 800 and 1600 with times of 2:32.25 and 5:34.68 respectively. Arelena Hannan took second in the 300 hurdles (50.31), and the 4x100 relay team of Kayla Grigg, Lunning, Overland and Hannan placed second at 51.51. Hannan, Roughan, Casci Carpenter and Selina Koon finished first in the 4x400 with a time of 4:15.64.

Sadie Nielsen continued to perform like a champion as she took second overall in the shot put with a throw of 35-06 1/2 feet and first in the discus with a toss of 126-06. In the Javelin event it was Paige Dyer taking second overall with a throw of 113 feet. Madison Wilks took sixth overall at 81-02 feet. Koon placed second (4-10) in the high jump. Lunning took first in the long jump (17-02), and Koon fourth with a leap of 15-10 1/4 feet. And Grigg (32-02 1/2) placed fourth in the triple jump.

"It was a good day overall," coach Nicki Weiland said. "We were short a few kids form injuries and illness, but we only lost by two points. The girls gave it their all and that's all a coach can ask for."

The district tournament gets underway Friday in Pasco at Edgar Brown Stadium. The top eight placers in each event will advance to regionals in Richland May 18 and 19.

Boys

The Chiefs heated things up from the get-go as Moses Lake had three of the top four finishers in the 100 meter dash. Edward Ransom took first with a time of 11.12 seconds. Brooks Milbrandt (11.77) finished second and Malcolm Ransom (11.88) finished fourth.

The Ransom brothers continued to shine as they placed first and second in the 200. Edward took top honors with a time of 21.87 seconds. Malcom (24.00) placed second. Lowell Kirkwood finished third (2:01.63) in the 800, Alec Schweisow (4:45.25) was fourth in the 1600 and Michael Sheremet (10:15.12) and Dylan Darlington (10:18.12) placed second and third in the 3200 meters.

In the 100 hurdles it was Allen Park taking second with a time of 17.64. Teammate Jacob Anderson was hot on his heels with a second place finish (18.75). Jacob Anderson and Anthony Morris finished second and third in the 300 hurdles with times of 48.00 and 48.29.

The 4x100 relay team of Milbrandt, Sam Welch and the Ransom brothers finished first overall with a time of 44.74 seconds. Kirkwood, Jamie Carpenter and the Ransom brothers led Moses Lake to a second place finish overall with a time of 3:38.87. Cameron Law took seventh and fourth overall in the shot put and discus events with throws of 36-07 and 111-05.

William Shestock placed fifth overall in the Javelin with a throw of 129-01 feet and Ben Crowell was second in the high jump as he cleared 5-06.  Law finished second overall in the pole vault (12-06 feet), Crowell was first in the long jump with a leap of 19-09 and first in the triple jump (40 foot even).
