BMX racers gear up for Memorial Day

MOSES LAKE - Hundreds of BMX racers and fans are expected at the Larson Recreation Center track in Moses Lake during Memorial Day weekend.
The "Race for Life" is being held May 27 and the "State Championship Race" May 28, with both events organized by Moses Lake BMX.
The local non-profit holds between 30 and 40 bicycle motocross events at Larson each year.
The Race For Life raises money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and last year brought in more than $2,000 to support the cause, according to Moses Lake BMX organizers Caleb and Melody Johnston.
The championship race is meanwhile expected to bring a minimum of 180 riders to town, not to mention family, friends and spectators, Melody Johnston recently told city council members.
"For this event we expect 60 motos, and to make a moto requires three riders," she said. "Many times we have more than three riders per moto and we had about 250 people last year. It's a really big deal."
Racing is planned Sunday, May 27, from 5 to 6 p.m. and Monday, May 28, from 9 to 10 a.m.
The council granted the Johnstons request to allow racers and their families to camp next to the track overnight on Sunday.
Anyone wishing to reserve a spot is asked to send an email to racing@moseslakebmx.com. Camping is free, but space is limited and the Johnstons request campers include whether they plan to bring a tent or RV, as well as the length of trailers.
