Two truck drivers injured in collision

MOSES LAKE - Two truck drivers received minor injuries, and traffic was blocked for four hours after a semi versus semi tractor-trailer crash near Moses Lake on Tuesday.

Grant County Sheriff's deputies, American Medical Response paramedics and Grant County Fire District No. 5 emergency medical technicians were called to the scene around 3:30 p.m. on April 17.

According to the Grant County Sheriff's Office, a 2007 Freightliner driven by Joel A. Sanford of San Leandro, Calif., was making a U-turn in the intersection of North Frontage Road East and County Road N NE. Sanford's trailer was struck by a 2001 Freightliner driven by Valentin O. Cantu, 56, of Moses Lake, which was traveling northbound on Road N NE.

The collision caused both tractors and trailers to roll onto their sides and spill their loads. There were potatoes off of Cantu's truck and baling twine off of Sanford's truck.

Traffic on Road N was blocked for more than four hours as the twine and potatoes were removed and the trucks and trailers towed from the scene. Both trucks will be inspected by the Washington State Patrol.

Sanford was driven by a motorist to Samaritan Hospital for treatment of a broken and dislocated elbow. Cantu was checked by EMTs and declined further treatment, the sheriff's office said.

A utility pole was damaged by the collision, and Grant County PUD crews responded to restore power to a few area home.
