MATTAWA - Mattawa Police Chief Steve Jensen reported to the Mattawa City Council's last meeting that five candidates have been interviewed for the open entry level position.

The next step, City Clerk Robin Newcomb said, is psychological testing and background checks. She said that process will start with the No. 1 choice and go through the choices until a candidate satisfies all of the requirements.

Newcomb noted there was a public hearing on Community Development Block Grant with no comment. It was decided to have the engineering firm of Gray & Osborne of Yakima write the application for the CDBG for a comprehensive water plan.

Newcomb said city planner Darryl Piercy suggested the city start discussion of a sidewalk plan. His interest was prompted by the expansion of a grocery store on Government Way.

The council voted for a zoning change that will make possible the construction of multi-family housing in commercial zones
