Sign language students hold event

MOSES LAKE - Moses Lake High School's American Sign Language (ASL) Club holds its first "Feel the Music" performance 6:30 p.m., May 8, at the high school theater.

Students directed by the school's ASL teacher, Kristi Couch, will sign along to popular music selections and a light show during the free performance. The music is loud, about what people would experience at a concert, and people may want to bring earplugs, said Couch. Earplugs are sold at the door.

"We have invited deaf and hearing people alike," said Couch. "Because deaf people can't hear the music, we are providing sound so they can feel it and light so they can see it."

It's the first time this kind of ASL performance has been done in Moses Lake, said Couch. She's excited to expose people to sign language.

"I hope to do it every year," she said. "I hope it's a big turnout and people want to see it."

The high school's ASL club is open to any student who wishes to join, said Couch. While most students in the club have taken an ASL course at the school, she has one member who wasn't able to enroll in the class but has learned a lot preparing for the performance, she said.
