Warden softball takes care of Soap Lake

SOAP LAKE - The Warden Cougars improved their record to 12-0 in the Central Washington 2B Conference and 15-2 overall with a two-game sweep over the Eagles Saturday.

Warden shutout Soap Lake 15-0 in game one, and turned back the Eagles in game two, 19-2.

Game one

The Cougars got off to a quick start as they hung seven runs on the board after their first at bat. Warden brought four runs across the plate in the second and third innings to increase the lead to 15-0.

The game was cut short as the 10-run five inning rule went into effect.  The Cougars had 11 hits in the game.

Iris Rodriguez pitched a no-hitter, while striking out nine batters for the win. She nearly had a perfect game, but the Cougars committed an error to blemish the effort.

Game two

The second game of the twin bill saw Warden take an eight run lead in the top of the first inning.

Soap Lake answered back with two in the bottom of the frame to keep the game within reach, 8-2. But unfortunately, that was all the offensive production from the Eagles.

Warden scored five times in the top of the second and put six runs on the scoreboard in the top of the third to win with ease, 19-2.

The Cougars out hit Soap Lake 10 to 1. Both teams had trouble in the field as Warden committed two errors and the Eagles had three miscues.

Sondra Platas was the winning pitcher of record for the Cougars. Platas led the offensive attack on the day for Warden going 4-for-6 at the plate. Narcy Guerra had three hits in five attempts with a home run.

Warden finishes out the regular season with a three game series against the 12-0 Kittitas Coyotes.

The first two games are at home Tuesday. Game one is scheduled to begin at  4 p.m. The Cougars travel to Kittitas Saturday for the third game of the series.

The district tournament gets underway at Eastmont High School in Wenatchee May 17.
