Chiefs softball turns back Eisenhower

MOSES LAKE - Moses Lake played an unwelcome host to the Cadets Friday as they took both games of a doubleheader against Eisenhower at Larson Field.
The wins improve the Chiefs to 6-1 in Big Nine play.
"This puts us in good shape for third place in the standings," coach Dave Gregory said. "Richland and Walla Walla is tied for first."

The Cadets got on the board first with a run in the top of first.
The Chiefs came out strong in their half of the inning with three batters crossing the plate to take a 3-1 lead.
Moses Lake added four more runs in the second and four in the third to expand the score to 11-1. Neither team scored in the fourth inning, but Eisenhower got a run in the top of the fifth to avoid the 10-run rule and extend the game one more inning.
The Cadets were unable to produce any threat in the top of the sixth, but the Chiefs added one more to their tally to win in a cakewalk, 12-1.
Jazmynn Jesse led the way for Moses Lake with two hits in four at bats, with a home run, two runs scored and six RBI. Hailie Bishop was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk four stolen bases and three runs scored. Sadee Smigaj had two hits in three plate appearances.
Haylie VanLaethem got the win as she went the distance, giving up two runs off six hits and fanning eight Cadets.

Game two of the twin bill was a lot more competitive as the Chiefs got by the Cadets by two runs.
As was the case in the first contest, Eisenhower struck first with two runs to start the game. Moses Lake answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 3-2.
The Cadets retook the lead 4-2 as they pushed two runners across the plate in the top of the third. Eisenhower made it 5-2 with a score in the top of the fourth.
The Chiefs fought back to tie the game 5-5 with two runs in their half of the inning.
Moses Lake held Eisenhower off the board the rest of the way, but added two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the come from behind win. Smigaj hit a go ahead double scoring Tressa Radach with the game winning run.
Smigaj had the hot bat for the Chief going 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored. VanLoethem got the start for Moses Lake. Smigaj came on in relief in the fourth inning to shut down the Cadets, allowing just one hit and did not give up a run.
Moses Lake resumed play of the second game of a doubleheader with Walla Walla Saturday that was postponed in the fourth inning because of rain April 17.
The Chiefs, trailing 4-1 when the game was suspended, saw the Cadets put five runs on the board in the bottom of the inning to blow the game open 9-1. Moses Lake failed to produce any runs over the next two at bats and dropped the contest 11-1. The loss drops the Chiefs to 6-2 in CBBN action.
Moses Lake ends the regular season at home Thursday when the Chiefs host a doubleheader against Chiawana at Larson Field. The first game gets underway at 4 p.m.
