Tigers tennis corrals Tonasket
Ephrata Tigers Tennis
EPHRATA - Ephrata boys and girls tennis made quick work out of the Tonasket Tigers Saturday, taking nine of 10 matches.
The win improve the boys to 2-0 in league play and 4-1 overall. The girls sport the identical win-loss record.
Boys
Ephrata took all five of the boys matches to hand Tonasket a goose egg for their efforts or lack thereof.
No. 1 singles Hunter Sears beat Anthony Verhasselt 6-0, 6-2. Michael Bosnar, the Tigers No. 2 singles defeated Tonasket's Trevor Terris in two sets, 6-0, 6-3.
The No. 1 doubles team of Michael McDonnell and Matt Jones cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Caleb Knowlton and Russell Perry.
Ephrata's No. 2 doubles Calvin Callahan and Maurico Contreras beat Brian Hendrick and Colton Leep in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, (18-16, and the No. 3 doubles Matt Jones and Stenn Monson rolled over Walker Marks and Morgan O'Brien 8-4.
"Both our singles guys were overpowering against their opponents," coach Missy Beierman said. "But the match of the day was at second doubles. We played a super tiebreaker as the third set (first one to 10 win by 2) and our boys pulled it out 18-16. Third doubles was shortened to a pro set due to Tonasket's low number of eligible boys."
Girls
The Lady Tigers overpowered their opponents from Tonasket Saturday as well, taking four of the five matches on the day.
Ephrata took both singles matches. No. 1 singles Bianca Schley turned back Michelle Timmerman, 6-2, 6-2, and Naomi Kooistra, the Tigers No. 2 singles beat Clare Thornton in two sets, 6-1, 6-0.
Tonasket bounced back with its only win of the match as Megan Beyers and Cayla Monroe defeated Tiana Schmitz and Tessa Ratigan 6-2, 6-2.
Ephrata rebound with back-to-back wins by the Tigers No. 2 and No. 3 doubles as Kim Beck and Aubrey Denley blanked Machand Renald and Abby Gshiel 6-0, 6-0, and Allison Pheasant and Demi Brekhus downed Michaela Newton and Brisa Leep in two set, 6-0, 6-1.
"It was good to see the girls finish their wins in straight sets especially after four of the five wins against Wapato (Friday) went three sets," Beierman said. "The girls are gaining confidence and beginning to control points more often."
Ephrata boys beat Wapato 4-1, and the girls shutout the Wolves 5-0.
The Tigers are back in action tomorrow when they take to the pavement to match up with West Valley.
