Othello girls tennis has strong showing
MOSES LAKE - Despite being shorthanded on the court, the Othello Huskies girls tennis team performed well at the jamboree in Moses Lake Saturday.
Missing out on the action were Amelia Roylance, Katrina Montemayor, Zarah, Araceli Flores, Andrew Logan, Bethany Vargas, Ben Taff and Austin Roylance.
"We had troubles filling spots," coach Robert Pruneda said. "A lot of athletes were gone due to speech and debate, drill team and drama competitions."
Nonetheless, the players who were able to make it had positive results.
The No. 1 doubles team of Jocelyn Cantu and Yanitta Cantu beat the Chiefs Becka Byam and Analysese Odacur in two sets, 6-1 6-0. And Othello's No. 3 doubles Keesten Anderson and Christian Murillo had an easy time with Moses Lake's Yolanda Sofield and April Ocampo, besting the team in two sets, 6-0, 6-0.
The Huskies doubles teams found little resistance against Cheney as well as Cantu and Cantu beat Liz Gill and Holly West in two sets 6-0, 6-0. Anderson and Murillo won their match in two sets beating Rachel Hamby and Melody Eaton, 7-5, 5-2.
"Jocelyn and Yanitta breezed through the competition. They are going to be strong this year and I expect them to be No. 1 in the league," Pruneda said. "Keesten is the sleeper for the girls team this year. She did not play last year. This is her first year and does what athletes do ... compete. She is my diamond in the rough."
The boys team didn't fair as well as the girls, losing three of the four singles matches to Moses Lake and splitting two matches with Cheney.
Alec Montemayor lost to the Chiefs Levi Guddleson in two sets, 3-6, 3-6. Gabe Harris was beaten by Tyler Krupp in two sets, 1-6, 2-6, and Michael Carlton was shut out by Josh Black, 0-6, 0-6. The loner winner for Othello was Juan Guiterrez who beat Moses Lake's Tyler McFarland in two sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Othello had better success against Cheney as the team took three of four matches.
Montemayor beat Cheney's Jacob Weisgerber 6-4, 6-4. Carlton downed Jordan Bennett 6-1, 6-2 and Guiterrez defeated Zach Klotz in two sets, 7-5, 7-5.
But Harris dropped his match to Eric Barrio in two sets 2-6, 4-6.
"The boys struggled against a great Moses Lake boys team. They were quicker than we were and utilized strong consistent serving to beat us," Pruneda said. "Cheney is a 2A school so we matched up good with them. They also did not have a full squad, but we were able to handle them fairly easily."
The Huskies are back in action March 20 when they open up the regular season in CWAC competition against the Jacks in Quincy.
