Tigers baseball turns back Kodiaks

EPHRATA - Bryce Beavers went 2-for-3 at the plate and had 3 RBI to lead the Tigers to a 13-1 win over visiting Cascade High School Saturday. The non-league game went just five innings as the 10-run rule was invoked, giving the Tigers the victory.
"I was pleased with the win ... it's a nice way to start the season," coach Jason Laugen said. "But we had too many strikeouts for this type of a game."
Four batters fanned on the day, but the team did achieve a couple of goals it had set before the action got underway.
"We talked about not giving up any walks or committing any errors," Laugen said. "And we were able to do that and didn't allow Cascade to have a big inning."
The game was never in doubt, as Ephrata took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and never really looked back. The Kodiaks did manage to tie the contest in the top half of the second, but the Tigers put eight runs on the board in the bottom of the inning, and four more in their half of the third to win in a cake walk.
Ephrata is back on the diamond Saturday when the travel to East Valley to take on the Red Devils to open regular season play.
"East Valley is pretty tough and is slated as one of the top teams in the league this season," Laugen said. "They just beat Sehome 11-7, so I expect to see a lot of offense from them."
