Readers agree with Doumit

Thank you for publishing Pete Doumit's guest editorial that appeared in the Columbia Basin Herald on Feb. 23. We wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Doumit and the wisdom of the ages (and until recently, the law of this state) that marriage is between one man and one women. It is our hope that all people who are like-minded will sign the referendum to repeal this unfortunate law.

Mr. Doumit also touched on issues in "Obamacare" that are against the moral principles of Catholics (and, we suspect some other Christians). We would like to add a few thoughts. Providing birth-control pills is not preventative medicine; pregnancy is not a disease. Abortion drugs do not cure a disease; they take a life.

One of the basic tenets that on which our nation was founded is "freedom of religion" and once the government starts to interfere with that freedom; the nation embarks on a very "slippery slope" that could lead to dire consequences. Once the government requires religious institutions to provide medical benefits (directly or indirectly as the latest 'loophole' that Obama has proposed) for medicines and procedures that go against the beliefs of the religion; religious freedom has been taken away.

We must not allow this to happen.
