Ephrata boys will rely on experience this season
MOSES LAKE - The Ephrata boys golf team is looking to be among the best in the CWAC this season as the Tigers return two state placers to the team.
"We'll have senior Andrew Whalen who has placed at state the last three years. He has been district champion all three years as well as League Player of the Year all three years," coach Greg Hewitt said. "Bryan Heer, a junior, also has state experience. I expect him be a major contributor to the success of this team this season."
The Tigers lost two golfers to graduation, Mattitas Dilling, who was a state placer and Cody Cummings. Both were instrumental in Ephrata's bid for top honors in the CWAC last year.
"We only lost one league match to Othello at their home course," Hewitt said. " That loss cost us the league championship."
The teams weakness this season Hewitt said is the inexperience of underclassmen on the links.
"We are a fairly young team," he said. "But we should be pretty good, barring any problems."
Hewitt, now in his 10th season as coach of the Tigers said East Valley, Othello and Selah are the teams to contend with this season.
"They are always three of the top teams in the league," he said. "And I expect them to be good again this year."
Ephrata gets back in the swing of things Friday when they host Grandview and Ellensburg at the Lakeview Golf and Country Club.
