Fresh News From MarDon: Unsteady weather, steady fishing
MarDon Resort - The weather around the Potholes Recreation Area has been uncharacteristic this week, with a roller coaster mix of hot & sunny days and wet & windy weather. This does not however even come close to deterring the fish from biting! The fishing at Potholes Reservoir is ever improving with a drop in the water level. The current water level and weather has stirred many species of fish into action. As of the latest, the water level on Potholes is 3 feet below full pool. Higher than usual for this time of year as there has been less demand for irrigation water so far this season. With the upcoming 4th of July the fishing should be hot and the weather even hotter. This upcoming week is supposed to around the 85F degree mark!
The Walleye Fishing has been improving across the reservoir with Winchester Wasteway and Crab Creek heating up. Many anglers have preferred to troll bottom walker rigs with nightcrawlers in 10-15 Feet, following that up with trolling plugs. Another option is Soda Lake with good reports coming from the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge water. Lately, the WDFW has been at the reservoir boat launches performing creel surveys with positive results!
This year has been awesome for trout fishing here on the reservoir. The Rainbow Trout have been feasting across the reservoir, specifically good reports out of Lind Coulee, Medicare Beach, and Frenchman's Wasteway. Some of the largest trout in the reservoir this week have been in the 4-6lb. range with a two pounder being common. You can come out here and catch a fine limit of trout trolling a Rapala Shad Rap crankbait in 10-20 feet of water
The bass fishing is ever improving, and with the unstable weather has driven flurries of fish to become active. Many anglers are reporting excellent fishing prior to the weather fronts, with schools of Smallmouth Bass and Largemouth Bass feeding on the abundant Perch and Bluegill. Largemouth up to 6lbs. and Smallmouth up to 4lbs. have reportedly been caught & released this week. If you can tie on a soft plastic tube jig; fish around Goose Island and the dam you will find the fish. Exploring the sand dunes you will be able to find a school of Largemouth.
Fishing off the MarDon Resort Dock has been picking up with mainly Smallmouth Bass and Trout being taken. Don't be surprised to see the fish schooled up around the dock soon with the water level dropping.
