Supporters donate more than $2K for Moses Lake library expansion

MOSES LAKE - More than 130 people dressed to the nines - or the ninth chapter - turned out for the Moses Lake Library Foundation's first fundraising event Friday evening at the city's Civic Center.

They also opened their wallets and shelled out more than $2,000.

"It was wonderful," foundation member Ellie Webb said. "The board member members got a chance to do some one-on-one talking with people about the new library and its extended design."

The library, constructed four decades ago, has outgrown the city's population, with plenty a complaint about space, noise, lack of Internet access, as well as many other issues.

"Our objective is to inform the public of the library's worth," foundation member Laura Monlux said. She also said that if even 100 people attended the event, she would have been more than happy.

"Growing up in a small town, you realize how important the public library is," longtime resident Charles Maynard said. "It was the only place to go for free during the summer."

The foundation hosted the event that included wine and beer donated from local vintners and brewers, as well as a full spread of homemade hors d'oeuvres.

"We definitely need a bigger and more up-to-date library," said Sucie Wise of Moses Lake.

"Mission accomplished," Webb said. "It was a good night, and we're all happy with the results."

Musical acts also provided their talents by donation to raise more money for the cause.
