Malott man killed in crash near Soap Lake

SOAP LAKE - A Malott man is dead after he reportedly failed to yield at a stop sign at state Route 17 and state Route 28, just south of the Soap Lake city limits.

Renney A. Koch, 62, was driving a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup south on SR 17 Monday about 11 p.m. when, according to the Washington State Patrol, he attempted to cross SR 28.

Koch was hit in the intersection by a 2007 tow truck driven west by Jay E. Sheriff, 47, Moses Lake, which then struck the driver's side of a 2001 Ford Ranger pickup stopped in the left turn lane of eastbound SR 28 driven by Delilah E. Pevehouse, 41, of Soap Lake, according to the state patrol.

The vehicles driven by Sheriff and Pevehouse reportedly came to rest blocking the roadway, while Koch's vehicle came to rest off the westbound shoulder.

Koch was taken to the Columbia Basin Hospital in Ephrata, where he was pronounced dead, according to the state patrol. His next of kin were notified by the Grant County Coroner's Office.

Pevehouse was reportedly transported by ambulance to Columbia Basin Hospital with injuries, but her 3-year-old Soap Lake passenger, Rory Rhoads, was uninjured, as was Sheriff.

The Washington State Patrol cited failure to yield as the cause of the collision.
