House near Moses Lake destroyed by fire

| June 1, 2012 6:00 AM

MOSES LAKE - A house just north of Moses Lake was destroyed by an early morning fire on Wednesday.

Grant County Fire District 5 Chief Dan Smith said the home, located at the end of a cul-de-sac on Crystal Springs Place Northeast, was fully engulfed by the time fire crews arrived at just after 3 a.m.

"It looks like it was a total loss," he said. "It had been burning for awhile before we were called out. At 3 a.m. there's not a lot of people up and around."

The roof of the house had already collapsed, and firefighters focused on stopping the spread of flames to a nearby garage, trees and a neighbor's fence, Smith said.

"There wasn't much to save by the time we arrived, but the guys did a great job of holding it where it was," he said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Smith said it appears it started on the exterior west side of the house near a patio.

The homeowners had been out of town since earlier in the week, Smith said, adding they have since been contacted.
