Fire leads to non-arson arrest

| July 27, 2012 6:00 AM

MOSES LAKE - A late-Tuesday night fire destroyed a man's home, sent him to the hospital, and set the stage to land him in jail.

Jonathan Lucas, 27, was found with minor burns on the ground outside his home, described as an older-model single-wide mobile home. He was transported to Samaritan Hospital for treatment.

Crews from Grant County Fire District No. 5 and Grant County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched at 11:12 p.m. in response to the blaze. They responded to a fully engulfed structure in a rural area at the end of Neppel Road.

Fire crews attempted to save his home, but it was deemed a total loss. District No. 5 Chief Dan Smith said that similar structures have a tendency to flame up quickly.

While securing the scene and assisting fire crews, deputies located a small growth of marijuana in a cluster of trees behind the charred home.

The plants were seized as evidence.

Lucas was also found to have a felony arrest warrant and was taken to Grant County Jail.
