SCHOOL BOND AND LEVY

Reader encourages support for Moses Lake

The key to a strong community is education. Moses Lake has the good fortune of strong schools and well-educated students. School staff, teachers, administrators, volunteers and board members have always done an outstanding job of making the most of available resources.

With decreasing revenue from taxes and the continuous cuts in the state budget, we rely on the community to support our schools. With the upcoming levy and bond proposal, I see needed upgrades and programs throughout K-12.

The cost is minimal considering the scope. All students will be positively impacted by improving space and improving student safety through upgrades. The levy helps maintain student programs not supported by state and federal funds. The levy pays for approximately 20 percent of the Moses Lake School District's programs and services. They would not exist without the levy.

The bond addresses the issue of overcrowding at all secondary schools. It will modernize the high school and create space for all day kindergarten. Bonds are run as deemed necessary. Additionally, these improvements are sustainable and can be incorporated in future development and growth plans. I encourage you to review the details at www.buildabrighterfuture.org.

Take a look around at our neighboring school districts and decide for yourself if paying a little more in property taxes has an effect on the quality of education.

No one wants less money in their pockets these days, but what we can't afford is to jeopardize the strength of Moses Lake, our schools and the future leaders that need these programs.

On Feb. 14, you will have the opportunity to pass a levy and bond to continue providing quality education and support the children and future leaders of Moses Lake.

Please join me in voting "yes" so we can maintain excellence in the Moses Lake School District.
