Reader disappointed by institute funding cut

My personal thanks to Mr. Ron Covey for his continued backing of the youth of Moses Lake. His gentlemanly and logical behavior at the ongoing Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District meeting stands as testimony to forward thinking and positive community involvement. Sadly, his recommendation to continue to fund the Moses Lake Water Quality Institute offered to the youth of Moses Lake fell on deaf ears. This program is not associated with any school and is open to all students: home schooled, private schooled and public schooled. In an age where science, technology, engineering and math are vital to the continued growth of the American economy, a local opportunity for our students to experience "real" science was dismissed as inconsequential, and the funding was dissolved by the two other board members. Mr. Covey's continued reference to the importance of educating the community's youth about the biology of our lake and its importance as a natural resource finally brought about partial funding, but in actuality it gutted the successful and meaningful program. My thanks again to Mr. Covey for embracing not only the education of our local youth, but also the future of Moses Lake, the community and the environment.
