Local wrestler wins Oregon Classic
Everett Ashley pins Rogan Coffman from Roseburg to win the championship in his weight class.
REDMOND, Ore. - Moses Lake product Everett Ashley (age 8) was crowned champion in the 95 pound weight classification at the Oregon Wrestling Classic Tournament in Redmond held Jan. 13-15.
He won all four of his preliminary matches, two by pin and two by decision (4-1, 4-0) and came back from a 7-0 deficit in the championship match to pin against Rogan Coffman from Roseburg in the third round.
The Oregon Wrestling Classic is one of the nation's largest wrestling events determined by the number of participants. Last year there were over 3,000 participants. The tournament is a three day event with the largest selection of high schools competing in five separate tournaments of dual meet competition.
The Oregon Classic tournament is by invite only. Wrestler must qualify by taking part in five organized tournaments in Washington and Oregon and finish no worse than third place to qualify. The qualifying tournaments this year were held in Marshfield, Klamath Falls, Redmond, Hermiston and Lake Stevens.
Everett has wrestled with the Ephrata, Warden and Moses Lake Wrestling Clubs. He is currently wrestling under coach PJ Anderson of the Ephrata Wrestling Club and privately with Mando Vela.
