Reader wants more support for project

I want to make the citizens of Moses Lake aware of a serious need in our community. Most of the people in town know that we have a girls Lego Robotic team "The RoboGirls." Most people that read the newspaper are aware that they have a fabulous record: 2009 Regional Champions and attended state championships, 2010 regional first place in Project Presentation and a state first place in Robotic Design and 2011 second place Regional Champions with a first place at state in Core Values-Inspiration.

Each year this team of girls ages 9-14 years old puts in an incredible amount of time and energy: learning, researching, building and programming. They do an awesome job! So awesome in fact, the 2011 team had the absolute maximum number of members possible and there are so many other girls that want to join the team. In order to increase the teams in Moses Lake, we need a minimum of two things: a place to make it happen and the funds to make it happen.

It is possible that the teams may receive some grant money in the coming year, but without some space, even the present team has a problem. What is truly needed is a large, secure room or rooms that can be used by the team Sept. 1 through Jan. 15 each year. Each competition table is 4-feet by 8-feet and room to work with two teams is very hard to find in Moses Lake. The teams are associated with a non-profit organization and it is possible that someone providing space could receive a tax credit for donating the space. Of course, these teams have other needs, but until they have a place to work everything else is not important.

If you would like to help out the RoboGirls, please call Carol Hohn 509-770-1207.
