GAY MARRIAGE

Two letters from the Thursday, Jan. 19, Columbia Basin Herald editorial page were filled with factual inaccuracies and bad arguments regarding homosexuality.

Rocky Cassiano, of Moses Lake, mistakenly believes that all humans should be heterosexual because birds live in pairs of male and female. This is false. Type "list of birds displaying homosexual behavior" into Wikipedia and you will find homosexual behavior documented in over 200 varieties of birds. Furthermore, bird behavior should not be our standard of morality since birds do nothing to care for their elderly or injured.

Rocky Cassiano mistakenly believes that only married straight people are responsible for civilization. This is also false. Western Civilization (including democracy, philosophy, science, medicine, theatre, history, etc.) was born in ancient Athens - and they loved homosexuality.

Karen Murray, of Quincy, claims that if homosexuals can marry, then the human race will cease to exist because no one will be making babies. This is absurd. Homosexuals are a small minority. The majority of people will still have straight sex and make babies.

Karen Murray apparently thinks that allowing some people to be gay means that all of us must be gay. But that's not how liberty works. Liberty is allowing other people to live their lives differently. We don't all have to live the same way. I can accept that other people are Republicans, but that doesn't make me a Republican.

Bottom line: if you don't like homosexuality, then don't be gay. It's that simple. Liberty means allowing others to live their life even if you don't like it.
