William Kirkwood

William "Bill" Glenn Kirkwood, 85, longtime Moses Lake resident passed away Friday, January 20, 2012 at his home. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 30, 2012 at Kayser's Chapel. William Glenn Kirkwood was born in Spokane, Washington to William S and Lillian (Nelson) Kirkwood of Davenport. Bill graduated from Davenport High School and Eastern Washington State College. He was a member of the athletic club at EWSC. He ran track until his junior year when an illness forced him to give up running. It was at EWSC that he met Clara Wagner. They were married on December 9, 1950. He began his teaching career in Colville, WA. While in Colville, Cathy Ann was born. In the summer of 1952 the family moved to Wilbur to farm with his father-in-law. In 1953, son Barry Glenn was born. Soon after Bill returned to EWSC to renew his teaching certificate and the following fall they moved to Moses Lake and he resumed his teaching career. In 1960, son Donald Lee was born. In 1968 the family moved to Block 40 area onto a part time unit, where the family became involved in community events. Bill was a volunteer fireman at Station 6 and served as fire chief for 20 years. He retired from teaching and coaching after 31 years in 1986. In 1999, Bill and Clara moved into town. He spent his retirement following his grandchildren in sports and doing wood working. His wood work projects were given to family.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Clara; daughter Cathy Lindsey (Tom); and sons, Barry (Valerie) and Don (Angie); eleven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and two brothers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, a sister, and nephew.
