Chiefs come up short in hoops

MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake Chiefs losing steak has reached 13 games as the girls basketball team lost twice in the past four days.

Moses Lake was beaten by Chiawana at home Monday, and on the road at Walla Walla last Saturday.

The Riverhawks Jennifer Gonzales sank 6-of-6 shots from behind the arc in the first half of play and scored a career high 22 points to lead Chiawana to a 40 point road win over the Chiefs Monday. The game was originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 20, but was postponed because of bad weather.

Moses Lake was never in the ball game as Chiawana led 24-6 at the end of the first quarter and was up 40-19 at the half. The Chiefs mounted a comeback of sorts in the second half of action as they knocked down 21 points. But the Riverhawks scored 30 to run away with the game.

Keiley Garcia led Moses Lake with 11 points. Emily Olson added eight, Sadie Nielsen contributed five points, Madison Wilks tallied four, Caylah Lunning and Selina Koon chipped in three points each, and Courtney Kunjara, Hailee Bishop and Carina Lefave finished with two each.

Delaney Hodgins added 15 points for the first-place Riverhawks.

WALLA WALLA - The Chiefs hit the road Saturday desperately needing a win to erase the goose egg in the Big Nine league standings.

But the Blue Devils had something else in mind as the dealt Moses Lake a six point loss, 42-36.

The defeat dropped the Chiefs to 0-7 and 1-13 overall.
