ROYAL CITY - Three families were honored by SHOC (Strengthening the Heart of Our Community) for their entries in the first annual Christmas Star Contest that went from Nov. 23-Dec. 15.

Each family was given a $100 reward, SHOC's Carolyn Bunch said. There were seven entries, and that made judging difficult.

"That was more than we anticipated," Bunch said. "But that's good. We hope the contest grows."

The Biggest Star Award went to the Wardenaar family. It was placed atop a grain silo, 100 feet off the ground. Four 65-foot rays emanated from the center.

The Most Colorful Star Award was presented to the Garcia family. Their star consisted of several different colored strands of lights which flashed different colors, much like a kaleidoscope.

The third award, the Most Unique Star went to Mauricio Romero. His star had a unique shape with similar shapes within the star. Romero used different light densities and sizes throughout the star to emphasize features.

"We would like to thank everyone who participated," Bunch said.
