Martin Luther King Jr. Committee holds banquet

MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. committee held its first fundraising banquet at the Moses Lake Event Center Sunday.

Supporters of the committee, which puts on an annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, were treated to dinner and a night of singing, performances and more in remembrance of King.

Youth from the community sang and put on a play at the banquet.

"We started with about six and we ended with over 20 students," said Givens.

The girls dressed up to honor the girls who died in the church bombing in Birmingham, Ala., she said.

"Those were some of the first victims of civil unrest," she said.

The boys dressed up to emulate King.

The play the children performed was called "The Girl Who Got Arrested" by Mack Lewis, about how 15-year-old Claudette Colvin "helped change history."

The children's theater performance takes viewers back to the days of segregation and the Civil Rights Movement.

Maryamu Givens presented committee president Charlie Jones with the Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership award on behalf of the committee.

"I wanted to honor the person that's been doing this for 20 years," she said.
