Moses Lake boys, girls beat Eisenhower

MOSES LAKE - Bryce Perez had 20 points and nine rebounds, and Cliff Phillips added 12 points and two boards to lead the Chiefs to a 58-32 home win over Eisenhower Friday.

The victory improves Moses Lake to 2-1 in league play and 5-6 overall.

"It as a good win for us," coach John Hohman said. "The first half wasn't real pretty ... not what we like as we had way too many turnovers."

The Cadets got on the board first on a jump shot by Andy Soto to take a 2-0 lead. But an 11-6 run by Moses Lake, led by six points from Perez, put the Chiefs up 11-8 at the end of the first quarter of play.

Sloppy ball handling by both teams kept the score close in the second quarter as Moses Lake took a 23-16 lead at intermission.

Kevin Bennett got thing going for the Chiefs when he drained a 3-point bucket to start the third quarter of action to put Moses Lake up by double-digits, 26-16.

His basket and stingy Chiefs defense ignited a 17-8 outburst that blow the game open, 40-24.

The Moses Lake shooters remained hot in the fourth quarter, out scoring Eisenhower 18-8 to win going away, 58-32.

"We came out and pressed them to start the second half and it created some turnovers and fast break baskets for us," Hohman said. "We also cut down on our fouls and that really contributed to the win."

Hohman said several players had good outings for the Chiefs.

"I thought Bryce and Cliff did a real nice job scoring for us tonight," he said. "And Josh Hirz did an outstanding job of getting us into our offensive sets.

I think this was one of his better games. It was nice to see him step up and take charge on the court."

Moses Lake is back in action tomorrow night when the Chiefs host league leading Davis at 7:30 p.m.

"Davis is a deep talented team," Hohman said. "The coach is really doing a great job with his kids this year."

YAKIMA - The Moses Lake girls basketball pulled out a 37-33 come from behind win on the road against Eisenhower Friday.

The victory improves the Chiefs record to 1-2 in the Big Nine and 2-9 overall.

"That was a real barn burner of a game," coach Matt Strophy said. "Both teams struggled offensively, but our defensive effort was better than Eisenhower in the end and we were able to come away with the win."

The Chiefs played catchup throughout the first half of play as the team trailed 9-6 after the first quarter, and 19-16 at the half.

But Moses Lake got a few key buckets in the third quarter of action that put the team up 29-28 to take its first lead of the game.

The Chiefs out scored the Cadets 8-5 in the fourth quarter to come away with the win.

Selina Koon led the way for Moses Lake with 10 points. Courtney Kunjara had eight, and Emily Olson and Sadie Nielsen finished with seven points each.

"Selina, who started out on our JV team had a huge night coming of the bench," Strophy said. "She had a couple of 3-pointers for us and hit a big shot near the end of the game to put us up by two possessions."

The Chiefs are back in action when they take to the road Tuesday to face the Davis Pirates.
