Big Bend installs new security cameras

MOSES LAKE - Security cameras able to detect spikes in activity and alert campus security are finding a home at Big Bend Community College.
The first of the new cameras were installed at the Health Sciences building and the campus bus stop. The college will place signs near the cameras at entryways and parking lots.
Instead of buying a security system with lots of features for all of the college's buildings, which would be cost prohibitive, the college bought a few cameras, found free open-source reporting software, and developed an in-house camera security system, said Eric Gruber of Big Bend Information Technology.
Cameras will be added at more locations on campus as funds are available. Indoor cameras cost $300 and outdoor cameras cost $1,000.
The outdoor cameras record one frame per second with good resolution, said Gruber. The college wants to ensure the resolution is adequate for law enforcement officials.
According to the college, Big Bend has reported minimal crime throughout most of its history, but in 2011, a woman was abducted in a Big Bend parking lot during morning classes.
