BMW/SGL plant to add second production line

| December 11, 2012 5:00 AM

MOSES LAKE - Officials at the SGL Group recently confirmed that they will add a second production line at the joint-venture carbon fiber plant they built with BMW in Moses Lake.

Dennis Baumann, head of business development for SGL, said adding the new line will bring full production capacity to about 3,000 metric tons of carbon fiber each year.

About 80 new jobs will be created at the plant as a result of having two fully operational lines, said Baumann. The second production line is expected to be up and running by mid-2013, he said.

The BMW/SGL plant cost about $100 million to build and began producing carbon fiber for BMW's line of electric cars in 2011.

BMW uses carbon fiber from the Moses Lake plant to build the automotive group's i-series line of cars.

BMW recently launched their two-door i3 concept coupe, which is designed to run purely on electric power, at the Los Angeles Auto Show in Los Angeles, Calif.
