ROYAL CITY - It's been a tough year so far for Royal High School tennis. Playing time has been cut and victories have been few.

The team is now back on the court after some postponed matches  during the last few weeks due to weather.

On March 20, the Royal boys were leading Connell, 4-0, when the last match was postponed due to darkness. This match will be completed first when the two teams meet again today. The girls lost  to Connell, 5-0.

Royal has had struggles in the last few matches with scores of:

Boys 1-4, Girls 3-2 against Granger.

Boys 0-5, Girls 2-3 against Ki-Be.

Boys 0-5, Girls 0-5 against Columbia/Burbank.

Overall, last week the records were: Boys, 0 Wins  4 losses (leading 1 match suspended). Girls, 1 Win,  4 losses.

The good news for coach Tim Mellum is that this has been the largest turnout for Royal Tennis in years. Nearly 40 students are participating on the four courts at the high school.

Leading the teams are seniors Noah Grant and Luis Ramírez and junior Luis Valenzuela for the boys and sophomores Allie Janet and Morgan Small and junior Zahria Rodriguez for the girls.

Notable performances so far this year have come from doubles partners Robin Grant and Bailey Workinger and Karol Ramos and Nancy Ortiz, along with girls singles player Rodríguez.

For the boys Ramírez had an epic three-hour match against Wahluke.
