Moses Lake boys beat Davis
Moses Lake MLHS Chiefs Tennis
YAKIMA - The Chiefs traveled to Pirates country Tuesday in search of two league wins. But Moses Lake only managed a split as the boys won five of seven matches and the girls lost five out of seven matches.
The boys jumped on top of Davis early, winning all four the single games. Tyler Knapp, the Chiefs No. 1 singles beat Martin Rogers-Reyes in two sets 6-4, 6-3. The No. 2 singles Josh Black turned back William Coleman in three sets 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (4). The No. 3 singles Drew Perez defeated Kyle Miller 6-3, 6-1, and Cody Jones, the Chiefs No. 4 singles won his match over Joe Shieh in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.
However, Moses Lake lost two of three doubles matches on the day. The No. 1 doubles of Jordan Earl and Marco Sanches were beaten by Seth Dufault and Andres Barragan 3-6, 6-7 (4).
The Chiefs No. 2 doubles team of Nolan Knapp and Matt Schafer got Moses Lake back in the win column with a hard fought three set match victory 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (3) over Daniel Catton and Hunter Long. But the No. 3 doubles Jace Hunt and Conner Uhlinger gave one back as they dropped their match to Ben Hohman and Liam Johnston 4-6, 5-7.
"We were hit with the flu bug and we were short three of our top six, but we showed our experience with seniors leading us to victory in all three set matches," coach Jon Wrigley said. "Nolan is playing lights out since we came back from break. He beat a good player in Roger-Reyes, and just keeps raising his level of play. Josh lost to Coleman in three sets last year and he really wanted that win and it was nice to see him dictate play and put his opponent on defense. And Matt and Nolan were down 0-5 in the third set and rally and back to win. I am not sure what flipped, but that showed heart to rally back in a big match."
Girls
The girls didn't fare as well as the boys as they dropped all four singles matches and won two of three doubles games.
The Chiefs No. 1 singles Courtney Kunjara lost in two sets 0-6, 3-6, to Paige Toop. Alyssa Tucker the No. 2 singles was defeated by Meg DeMond 1-6, 0-6, Ece Yilmaz was beaten by Erica DeMond 2-6, 1-6, and the Chiefs No. 3 singles Kylee McKay lost to Hannah Besso 6-7 (2), 4-6.
Moses Lake bounced back with two wins in the doubles matches as Becca Byam and Annalise Odegaard defeated Katy Jach and Catherine Maier 6-4, 6-4, and Dorothy Cately and Carina LeFave won out over Alexa Farley and Lily Naughton in two sets 6-4, 6-3. The girls No. 3 doubles Sierra Gallaway and Marki Koreis dropped the last match 3-6, 4-6 to the Pirates Haley Hargreaves and Sandia Kim.
"Davis has the three top girls in our 4A league. It's a luxury for them to have that much talent at the top and they have a group of seasoned varsity players behind them," Wrigley said. "But Becca and Annalise moved to 4-0 in league and are playing with more confidence and have reached a whole new level as the season has progressed."
Moses Lake is back in action today when the team takes on the Blue Devils at Walla Walla
