Odessa receives high-speed Internet service

ODESSA - The first phase of a major broadband expansion throughout Eastern Washington has been completed, connecting the rural Odessa area to high-speed Internet service.

Northwest Open Access Network (NoaNet) is utilizing two federal grants totaling $140 million to bring high-speed Internet access to under-served Eastern Washington schools, hospitals, emergency response agencies and libraries, according to NoaNet officials.

They say the project also lays the groundwork for bringing affordable broadband service to thousands of businesses and households in the region.

"Connecting Odessa is the first step in what will be a landmark initiative for Eastern Washington," stated NoaNet CEO Greg Marney. "High-speed broadband will spur economic growth, save lives and connect the local communities to a world of opportunities. We're excited to keep the work moving forward."

NoaNet, based in Tacoma, is a non-profit mutual corporation providing wholesale telecommunications transport. The company is organizing construction of an "information backbone" for the region on behalf of a consortium of more than 50 private, governmental, tribal and non-profit participants.

Odessa is the latest community to be connected as part of a statewide broadband expansion program the company expects will eventually reach more than 170 communities and 2,000 public institutions, including 34 community colleges.

A representative from NoaNet will give a presentation to the Odessa Chamber of Commerce regarding high-speed broadband expansion April 24 at noon at the Any Occasion Banquet Hall, 3 First Ave. in Odessa.
