MATTAWA - This will be a bright year for Wahluke in prep track and field if the results of a key invitational last week are an indication.

Two Warriors set school records in their events, and seven more set personal bests at Quincy's Best in the Basin Track & Field meet Thursday afternoon.

"It was very wet, and we felt as if we had been transplanted on the west side of the state, but the kids ran, jumped and threw and were able to overcome the elements and do well," coach James Murdoch said.

Setting new school records were Rafa Mendoza and Jared Sabin. Mendoza cruised the 300 hurdles in 41.18 seconds. Sabin threw the spear 160 feet, 11 inches.

Warriors who set personal bests were: Lupita Guerrero-200m, Sujeily Ruiz-800m, Maria Juarez-1600m, Cynthia Hernandez-1600m, Morgan Peterson-300 Hurdles, Javelin, Thalia Quintero-Javelin and Elma Herrera-Javelin

Top 6 placers from Wahluke were:

Rafa Mendoza: First, 110 High Hurdles; first, 300 Hurdles; 2nd Triple Jump.

Jared Sabin: First, Javelin; 5th Triple Jump.

Samuel Badillo: Fourth, Discus; 4th, Shot Put.

Steven Machuca: Sixth, 110 Hurdles; 6th, 300 Hurdles.

Katelyn Peterson: First, Long Jump; 1st, Triple Jump; 2nd, 200 Meters.

Maripaz Olivarez: Second, 800 Meters; 4th, 1600 Meters.

Morgan Peterson: Fifth, 300 Hurdles.

Boys 4x100 Meter Relay: Second (Rafa Mendoza, Javier Higuera, Dario Prudente, Jared Sabin).

Girls 4x400 Meter Relay: Fifth (Maria Juarez, Liliana Ramirez, Surely Ruiz, Maripaz Olivarez).

"All of the athletes who competed did quite well," Murdoch said. "They should feel good about their performances, given the weather conditions."

The Warriors have a few tracksters who rank among the top ten in the State 1A ranks in their events and are on track to make the State Championships at the end of May.

"There is still a lot of work to be done until the end of May, but if they keep at it, they are in a very solid position to be in the top places at Districts to make it to the State Championships," Murdoch said.
