Chiefs baseball drops league openers

RICHLAND - Moses Lake was looking to jump out front of the competition in Big Nine baseball with a couple of road wins against Richland last Friday.
But unfortunately, the Chiefs dropped both games to the Bombers to fall to 0-2 in league play.
Game one
Moses Lake got off to a bad start in the first game of the doubleheader as the Chiefs were shutout 6-0. Moses Lake only managed three hits against the Bombers and committed six errors in the loss.
"We had trouble fielding the ball in this game," coach Quintz Whitaker said. "But on the bright side of things, we had great pitching as we only gave up two hits, and that's something positive to build on."
Game two
The second game of the twin bill was a bit more competitive as the Chiefs battled the Bombers to a 7-5 score, but still lost the contest.
Moses Lake went up 1-0 in the top of the first. Richland got a run back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 1-1.
The Chiefs failed to score in the next four innings, but the Bombers added three runs in the third and three in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead.
Moses Lake scored three runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to make a game of it, but lost by two runs.
"We had the go ahead run at the plate in the top of the seventh," Whitaker said. "But we weren't able to take advantage of that and pull out the win."
Moses Lake had trouble once again with miscues as the team committed four more errors for a total of 10 on the day.
Richland out hit the Chiefs 13-8. Nine Moses Lake batters fanned over seven innings of play.
The Chiefs are back on the diamond today when they travel to Eastmont for a game against the Wildcats.
