Chiefs soccer turns back Richland

RICHLAND - The Chiefs picked up a much needed league road win in Richland Saturday with a 1-0 shutout over the Bombers. The victory improves Moses Lake to 3-1 in the Big Nine standings and 5-2 overall.
"Richland played tough," coach Bill Bertram said. "They kept the pressure on us all game, but we controlled the midfield and were able to stop any build-up early."
The low scoring contest was packed with defense from both squads as only one goal was surrendered on the match. That came at the 10 minute-mark of the game on a score by the Chiefs A.J.Montes off an assist by Jonny Cortez.
"A.J. hit a screaming volley just inside the left post from 15 yards out," Bertram said. " Their keeper had no chance at stopping the goal ... all he could do was just stand and watch."
Bertram said Cortez and Miguel Martinez turned in solid efforts in the match for Moses Lake.
"Jonny kept the pressure on up top all afternoon,"he said. "And Miguel played an outstanding game at right back."
The Chiefs had 11 shots on frame to the Bombers five in the contest.
Moses Lake is back on the pitch Tuesday when they host Walla Walla at Lions Field. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
"That's our next big test," Bertram said. "The match will determine the outright leader in the Big Nine."
