Warriors drop two in volleyball

MATTAWA - The Wahluke girls played well, but they dropped South Central A Conference East volleyball contests to Burbank and Kiona-Benton last week.

Burbank prevailed 25-6, 25-11, 14-25, 25-18. Ki-Be won 22-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-16.

Cassandra Villalobos had a big effort against Burbank. She served seven aces, produced six kills, made nine digs and had six perfect passes.

Carina Barajas was 100 percent on her serving, Wendy Garcia had four digs and six assists, Marleny Garcia had four kills and one block, Jessica Ledezma had six digs and Tanya Mendez had five digs and seven perfect passes.

"The team showed potential when they worked together," coach Rudi Christian said. "They started off the first two games very slowly but really picked up intensity during the third and fourth games."

The Warriors showed even more intensity against Ki-Be. They won the first game and played tough in the second and third.

Wendy Garcia had a fine all around game. She scored three aces and five kills had five digs and five assists.

Villalobos was tough all around. She led in kills with 11, made 11 digs, eight perfect passes and two aces.

Other girls with notable contributions were Barajas with two aces and six digs, Ledezma with three aces, two kills and five digs, Mendez with 100 percent serving, two aces, five kills and 113 digs and Maripaz Olivarez with three digs and two perfect passes.

Elma Herrera had a streak of six straight points while serving and had two digs but suffered an ankle injury.

"The girls played together and trusted each other on the court," Christian said.
